The Huber Heights City School District is located in Montgomery County, northeast of Dayton. The district has grown from one building in 1954 to the current 10 buildings housing a student enrollment of approximately 6,800. These students are educated in one high school complex (grades 9-12), two middle schools (grades 6-8), and seven elementary buildings (grades K-5). The newest construction in the Huber Heights City School District is Alumni Hall. Completed in 1994 and considered a tribute to the many alumni of Wayne High School, this building increased classroom space at Wayne and added a formal exterior to the high school's campus-style complex. The schools are the focus of the community in Huber Heights, and the district's teachers and schools have earned a variety of honors. In 1996, Kitty Hawk Elementary was named a Hall of Fame School by the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators. Wayne High School was selected as the Brad Tillson Excellence in Education winner in 1997, the first high school in the Montgomery County-Greene County area to receive this honor. The district offers a variety of educational programs to serve the needs of a diverse student population. Special education services, gifted programs, advanced placement classes, English-as-a-second-language tutoring and college preparatory courses strengthen the K-12 general education curriculum. The focused efforts of administration, staff, parents, and students have positively impacted student achievement on the district's local report card. Ranked as an “academic watch” district in 2000, the district earned a “continuous improvement” rating in 2003 and 2004. This rapid progress reflects the district's vision that, “All Children Can and Will Learn.” In addition to the emphasis on academics, students attending the Huber Heights City School District also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including athletics, band, drill team, choir, student council and crime-watch, to name a few. The school district welcomes community involvement in the schools and actively seeks volunteers to work with students in a wide range of activities. In conjunction with the community, the staff and students of the Huber Heights City School District are working hard to earn an “excellent” rating on the local report card. |
